Now, is imperfect communism, or imperfect socialism, better than imperfect capitalism? I'd argue yes, because it trends more along the lines of morality whereas capitalism is very cutthroat and amoral.

you seem to be overlooking the bad parts of communism and socialism.  in those, people have zero power.

in corporatist america, you still have no power. there are plenty of good examples of socialism working in Europe, its actually the shining beacon for a model society in the world.

Communism is a novel idea, but I can't think of any examples where communism was definitively good. Or even just okay. In most cases didn't it end in those in power being corrupt, and the proletariat ended up starving and freezing?

Doesn't sound like something I'd vote for (unless I was assured to be in a position of power).

I just think we were fed bad communism. A lot of the Marx-Lenin branches of communism are bad in that they place the power in one centralized ruling entity. More Eurocommunism style communism is a lot more moderated, and attempts to reach consensus through peaceful means. To establish things as the norm gradually, and on their own merits, rather than by the force of the ruling party.

My main problem with communism was the insistence on a forceful proletarian revolution. It is my opinion that such things will arise gradually and spontaneously, as the working many outnumber the bourgeois few. That, and the need for a ruling party just spells trouble to me.

To me, worker rights, centralized planning, all that is very good and can be applied without the harsh effects of the more rugged communist elements of Marx-Lenin.

Eurocommunism is really closer to social democracy that's prevalent in Europe, and even that, is a hell of a step more progressive than the insanity we have in the United States.

I'm not big into politics but from what i do know i think Glenn Beck is too outspoken and goes 100% with absurd opinions. He changes his views a lot tho so it makes him look dumb when he contradicts himself so much.

Honestly, glad Glenn is gone. Hopefully he gets sent to Iran or something. In the mean time, referring to Warrior's post:

As much as I am an Obama supporter to a point, I think High Speed Rail is a waste of money. We can build low energy jets that do the same thing, and will actually be used all the time. There is a lot of debate over this, but honestly, why would I sit on a train for 8 hrs when I can fly in 4, and for cheaper?

Given the cost of the High Speed rail projects, ticket prices are going to have to be astronomical to offset the cost.

I say, might as well keep researching matter<>energy transporter technology, and stop trying to rely on old ideas with a new "bling".

But at the same time, planes are fairly older technology nowadays also. Almost all of the planes in the air are over 15 yrs old. They need to invest the money they've been banking from consumers on newer, lighter, and more fuel efficient aircraft. Considering that Boeing has a couple billion in assets, they could fund the research and open their own 'Green Airline'.

Oh well. Rambles suck.

No: we move to transportation that can be run by electricity rather than oil (magnetic levitation), and then get our energy from the sun and wind.  One word: Japan.

edit: also, we need to start moving away from plastics and polystyrene too.

@Tagban: Agreed on the flying vs. other means of transit, but a rail system has benefits beyond just travel. More of its benefits lay in its ability for transportation of goods rather than people. It's been shown time & time again that investment into infrastructure pays off. It would create jobs & help the US to (hopefully) reduce costs of transit of goods, which theoretically should help to keep the cost of goods down.

It sounds great on paper, we'll see how it translates to action.

@Loud: agreed, except...

which theoretically should help to keep the cost of goods down.

That's not quite the whole picture (sorry, minor rant).  The cost of goods in this country is often dictated by government systems, rather than the market.  Take sugar for example (the second most profitable crop, tobacco being the first).  The cost of sugar in this country is basically triple (roughly 22c/lb) compared to the cost of sugar worldwide (roughly 7c/lb).  The reason is we actually subsidize the sugar companies and guarantee this price.  That means a few things: if you need sugar in America, you pretty much have to buy American sugar, and we consume a lot of sugar; if the industry produces more sugar, the government buys the excess; both prices paid (industry and government) are at the guaranteed price of ~22c/lb.

We're basically getting robbed twice in the same transaction.

Nope. Multiplier effects in the economy from people having jobs building the rail is going to offset the cost all by itself. For example:
Let's say  high speed rail creates 10 jobs: That's 10 people making wages, and having disposable income which go out and shop, which keeps the people working at the places they shop employed so they shop (and keep others employed, etc..), and increases the bottom line of those companies, who hire more workers, and the cycle just goes on.

Oh, and as for commodity prices: Volatile prices are volatile. There's so much white noise in those prices its nearly impossible to pin down one specific policy which is positively or negatively affecting them.

Glenn Beck is everything that is wrong with America. I'm embarassed to live in the same country as some of the idiots on Fox News(And frankly some on MSNBC too, but for different reasons).

Hating him is evil? LOL! You crack me up. Hating anything isn't evil. I hate east Indian food cause i find most of it too spicy, doesn't mean it's evil. LeerRosh, please grow a brain.

By the way, you can be patriotic and not be an egotistical lunatic. But to me, what made me feel like punching out Glenn Beck was because of the those few sheer minutes he was spewing bullcrap out of his mouth & i felt like he needed his ass kicked.

GB is a paranoid ass-backwards topsy-turvy lunatic that poisons young minds.

You dislike indian food.  Hate is a stronger emotion, and it is never the right thing.  There is a difference between hate and justice.  Say Hitler.  It is wrong to hate Hitler, however, it is right to stop the evil things he does out of love for those he hurts.  That is justice, and that is the difference.
